Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The College of Design's orgins began as an architectural engineering option within the College of Engineering in the 1920s. Professor Charles P. Graves joined the Civil Engineering faculty in 1958, and converted the architectural option to a professional degree program. The curriculum based in mathematics and applied sciences added in arts, humanities, architectural design and history courses.
- In 1965, the program became an official School of Architecture with Professor Graves as Dean. That year, the program also received its first accreditation from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). The School was recognized as a College by the Board of Trustees in 1970.
- The professional degree for interior design was established in 1975, becoming fully accredited in 1981.
- The Master of Historic Preservation degree was first offered in 1996.
- The School of Architecture would obsorb the School of Interiors and Historic Presrevation Program to become the College of Design in 2002.
- Product Design was launched in Fall 2020.
- Previously housed within Pence Hall, the College of Design moved into the Gray Design Building, formally the Reynolds Building, a former tobacco warehouse.

- The University of Kentucy College of Design General Records, 1937-2018, 4.35 cubic feet (7 document boxes, 5 flat boxes), .24 megabiytes (16 files), comprises press releases, news clippings, brochures, reports, invitations, announcements, promotional paphlets and booklets, posters, student and faculty projects, symposium and conference proceedings, exhibit and lecture promotional material, and faculty newsletters and memoranda that document operations of the College of Design including its accreditation, faculty and student work, building restoration, exhibitions, symposiums, conferences, internal correspondence/memoranda, course offerings, and the Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society. Also included are newspaper clippings/photocopies that document major architectural constructions in Kentucky, with some dating back to 1937.
