- These are legal papers from several lawsuits involving John Maxwell, an early landowner in Lexington, Ky. One suit was against Adam Rankin and Thomas Wallace and concerned a tract of land given by Maxwell to be used as the site of a Presbyterian church (52W110). The suit reflects a controversy between Adam Rankin and his followers and another group from Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. One of the items in the collection is a survey map of Lexington showing the "race path." Later papers concern trespassing charges Maxwell pressed against Adam Rankin, Samuel Rankin, and Andrew Walker in 1817 (52W113). Another group of papers relates also to a dispute between Maxwell and Adam Rankin, once again over land (52W115). This set of papers includes depositions by Robert Todd, Alexander McConnell and Robert Patterson.
