Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Naturalist. Born near Constantinople in 1783, Rafinesque traveled widely pursuing his studies in natural history. He was appointed professor of botany, natural history and modern languages at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky in 1818 and remained there until 1826. He published not only on botany and ichthyology, but also banking, economics the Bible and other topics.
- Scope and Content
- This small collection consists of three signed and dated manuscripts by naturalist Constantine S. Rafinesque. Two of the items are maps of several Indian mounds and monuments along the north and south branches of Elkhorn Creek in Fayette County, Kentucky. The survey maps contain manuscript notes and explanations and are signed by Rafinesque. A third item is a pencil sketch of a black man with the name Miles Cutchins (?) written above the drawing.

The Breckinridge Research Room will be closed starting May 11, 2026, and anticipates re-opening Fall semester 2026 in an alternate location for the duration of the King Library renovation.
Reproduction requests will still be available during the closure.
