- Biography / History
- Ted Arthurs was born in Ohio in 1929 to Hugh Arthurs (1903-1997) and Clarice Brown (1901-1987). He served in the US Marine Corps between 1946 and 1949 and then completed two stints in the US Army, first between 1950 and 1957 in Korea reaching the rank of First Sergeant and second between 1966 and 1977 in Vietnam reaching the rank of Command Sergeant Major. While serving in Vietnam Arthurs was awarded the Silver Star for aiding in the evacuation and retrieval of wounded and dead soldiers in the midst of a heliborne assault to capture a location to build Fire Support Base 15 during the Battle of Dak To. Arthurs is also the author of Land with No Sun: A Year in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne. He currently resides in Florida.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Ted Arthurs papers (dated 1968, undated; 0.04 cubic feet; 1 folder, 1 photograph) comprise letters, clipping, statement, and a photograph that document Ted Arthurs' experience as a paratrooper serving in the Vietnam War. The letters and statement discuss battles Arthurs experienced while in Vietnam, the courageous actions of fellow soldiers, changes in commanding officers, awards he received, support for fallen troops, and advice for newly commissioned officers. The clipping discusses the experience of a paratrooper in Vietnam, and the photograph depicts Arthurs viewing an item with a group of people.
- The Ted Arthurs papers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
