- John McReynolds, an attorney in Louisville in the mid-nineteenth century, was the great-uncle of James Clark McReynolds, who served as a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1914 to 1941.
- Scope and Content
- The original of Benjamin McReynolds' diary was deposited in the Kentucky Library of Western Kentucky University.
- This collection brings together papers relating to the McReynolds family, whose members included U.S. Supreme Court Justice James Clark McReynolds. The largest part of the collection (62M152) consists of correspondence relating to John McReynolds and his law practice. There are also two letters from James McReynolds discussing the older materials as they related to his family history. Also included are two typed genealogies of the McReynolds family and a typescript of a diary kept by Benjamin McReynolds in 1823 (all in 55M28).

The Breckinridge Research Room will be closed starting May 11, 2026, and anticipates re-opening Fall semester 2026 in an alternate location for the duration of the King Library renovation.
Reproduction requests will still be available during the closure.
