- Biography / History
- Dr. John M. Goodwin was born in 1822 in Clark County, Indiana. He married Delia B. La Rue in 1858 and they had two children, Clarence La Rue Goodwin (b. 1859) and John M. Goodwin (b. 1861). He graduated from the Louisville Medical College and practiced medicine in Warren County, Kentucky, from 1852 to his death in 1863.
- Scope and Content
- The Dr. John M. Goodwin medical ledgers (dated 1850-1859; 0.5 cubic feet; 1 box) comprise accounting ledgers that document Dr. Goodwin's medical practice financials in Warren County, Kentucky during the 1850s. The ledgers record names, medical visits, medicine, and the costs of treatment. African American patients are identified in the ledger by the term "negro", and the ledgers include entries of medical care for enslaved people. The ledgers are interleaved with notes, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. The ledgers include a medicinal note concerning the use of quinine in those with flux.
