- Biography / History
- Dr. James Barbee O'Bannon (1864-1934) was a Kentucky physician who practiced primarily in Mt. Carmel, Kentucky. His father was a farm laborer. Dr. O'Bannon married Sallie Muse and they had at least one child, James H. O'Bannon.
- Little is known about Dr. O'Bannon's medical career, other than he left Kentucky for a brief period to practice in Indiana. He worked as a doctor until his death in 1934 at the age of 70.
- Scope and Content
- The J.B. O'Bannon Federal Narcotic record book (dated 1915-1930; 0.01 cubic foot; 1 folder) is a federally mandated record of the prescription narcotics Dr. J.B. O'Bannon from Mt. Carmel, Kentucky, dispensed to his patients. The Harrison Anti-Narcotic Law passed in 1914 required doctors to regulate the distribution of prescription narcotics, and this book is the direct result ofthat law. The book was published by The Abbott Alkaloidal Company from Chicago, Illinois, and contains advertisements for numerous medicines manufactured by the company, particularly ones that could replace narcotics.
- Within the book, Dr. O'Bannon recorded the date, type of narcotic dispensed, dosage, patient's name, and patient's location. The record book also contains supply lists of types and amounts of narcotics in Dr. O'Bannon's command.
