As the sun rises over the mountains of Jordan and the
desert is revealed, the heat jumps and the Dead Sea
shimmers gently between its vast shores. The powerful
hum of hundreds of voices praying independently and
yet all at once echoes from the Western Wall, and the
golden roof of the Dome of the Rock points to the
emerging stars above. This place has a story in every
grain of sand, every growing root, every rock. It is
inhabited by beautiful, spiritual, people living each day
passionately and freely, in spite of the sandy sea of hatred
that lurks all around them. Is it dangerous and scary
there? No. How can you not feel safe and spirited when
around these unique indiyiduals? They spend each day

past 58 years sweating blood and
tears to earn their land. They continue
fighting for it, tilling it, and out of
the sand and rock has grown a place
of innovation, prosperity, and hope.

Israel is truly a contemporary
country, despite the old-world
images we often see on the news.
There is great food, music, crafts, and
fine art. There are shopping malls,
high-rise apartment buildings and
office towers, beautiful
neighborhoods filled with modern
houses, and convenient public
transportation. There is even a new
speed train under construction
between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

In honor of the Temple’s 100th Year Anniversary, Harold
Baker formed a committee to choose and purchase a work
of art. After much exploration, the committee voted to
commission a tapestry for the back wall of the bimah.
With the guidance of Susan Goldstein and Irma
Rosenstein, they issued a national call to artists and
received 35 submissions from around the country. They
narrowed the list to six finalists, whom they contacted
and asked to do a site—specific proposal. A well—known
tapestry artist, Laurie Dill—Kocher from Rochester, New

In lune, three members ofour community,
Simone Salomon, Ronit Eres, and Tainara
Ohayon, visited the Youth Village of
Hadassah-Neurim, where, starting this
fall, the Central Kentucky jezoish
community, through the LIIC/CKIF
Community Campaign, will befunding a
special program called Net@:From High
Risk to High Tech. Your contributions to
the Community Campaign make it possible
for us to provide $150,000 over a three—
year period for this unique project.

I have just returned from a two—week visit to Israel, my
first in almost twelve years. As you can imagine, there
have many changes. Israel is a much more western,
sophisticated place than what I remembered from
previous visits—still beautiful but with a mixture of the
very modern and the very old. This trip with my friends
Ronit and Merav Eres afforded me the opportunity to see
Israel on a more personal level. The only danger I felt was
when I was on the highway with Israeli drivers.

A real highlight of the visit was visiting Hadassah
Neurim to take a first hand look at our Net@ project.
Hadassah Neurim sits on the beautiful Mediterranean just
north of Natanya. Our community here in Lexington is a
partner in supporting one of the many programs Net@)

disadvantaged youth. Upon completion of this three year
Net@ course, students are awarded an international
certificates as PC technicians or network managers. All
classes are taught in English.

Leon Levitas, from the Jewish Agency, picked us up in Tel
Aviv and took us to Hadassah Neurim. On the way, he
was very helpful in filling us in on the history both of the
