- Biography / History
- Soldier, Farmer, Surveyor. Green Clay was born in Powhaton County, Virginia, and emigrated to Kentucky in 1777. He became a surveyor, and partly as a result of his work, amassed a vast land estate. He settled in Madison County, and served in both houses of the Kentucky legislature. During the War of 1812 he served as a major general and raised the siege of Fort Meigs, Ohio, reinforcing the army of General William Henry Harrison.
- Scope and Content
- This collection consists of military papers relating to Clay's service at Fort Meigs, Ohio. Included are twenty-five receipts for military supplies and equipment, dated from May to July of 1813, and signed by or for Clay. Also present is an order book containing copies of general and brigade orders relating to the troops under Clay's commands at the fort. The orders concern courts-martial; the discipline, drill, and dress of troops; regulations about settlers, the items they could sell and the prices they could charge; promotions; care of the sick; commendations for meritorious conduct; and guard duty.
