- H.M. McCarty was the Assistant Secretary of State in Kentucky under Gov. James P. Knott. The Secretary of State at that time was James A. McKenzie.
- Scope and Content
- H.M. McCarty's letterbook contains copies of letters sent between October 22, 1883 and May 12, 1885. They concern matters such as state fees, legislature, office appointments and other business transactions. Most of the letters were typed by Clarence Egbert, private secretary to the governor.
