- In 1863, Union Captain Clinton Jones True of the 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry was promoted to Colonel and authorized to recruit for 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, which he culled mainly from the eastern part of the state. Until December of 1863, the 40th was on scout duty in north-central Kentucky, where they saw action at Mount Sterling on December 3 and 10, 1863. The 40th was then moved to scout duty in Eastern Kentucky. With the 11th Michigan Mounted Infantry also under his command, True and the 40th routed Confederate Colonel Ferguson at Paintsville, Kentucky on April 14, 1864. True later organized the 53rd Kentucky Mounted Infantry in 1864 at Paris, Kentucky. The 53rd participated in the destruction of the Confederate salt and iron works in Saltville, Virginia.
- After the war, True was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to serve as consul in the West Indies where he resided on the island of St. Thomas.

- The Clinton Jones True Photographic Collection, 1861-1892 consists of five tintypes and eight albumen cartes de visite. Seven of the images are identified as Clinton Jones True, the remainder of the subjects are unknown.
