- Two of the daughters of the Todd family, Mary Jane (b.1832) and Elizabeth (b.1834) attended Science Hill Academy in Shelbyville, Kentucky.
- Scope and Content
- The Todd family papers (dated 1842-1884; 0.35 cubic feet; 2 boxes) consist of correspondence among members of the Todd family of Chestnut Grove in Shelby County, Kentucky. These letters provide examples of the intimate attachments formed among young women in the first half of the nineteenth century, as well as concern for schoolwork, family clothes and most prominent of all, prospects for marriage. Several letters from James Todd (b. 1835), attending school in Danville, Kentucky, offers a male perspective on adolescence in the nineteenth century. Also present are drafts of school essays and poems written by Mary Jane and Elizabeth Todd and their friends at Science Hill.
