- Biography / History
- John R. Jones (1785-1864) was born in Mecklenburg, Virginia, to Baalam Jones and Martha Green. He married Elizabeth Lewis in 1809, and they had three children. Jones was a farmer with a significant estate near Bloomfield, Kentucky. Deemed a Union sympathizer, he was shot outside his home in 1864 by Confederate soldiers.
- Scope and Content
- The John R. Jones Diary (dated 1844; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 folder) consists of a diary kept by John R. Jones that documents his journey from Washington County, Kentucky to the Democratic National Convention of 1844 in Baltimore, Maryland. At this Democratic National Convention, James K. Polk was selected as the Presidential nominee, and George M. Dallas was selected as the Vice Presidential nominee. Describing the route he and his daughter, Faney M. Jones, took to arrive in Baltimore and return to Washington County, Jones creates a detailed account of travel and infrastructure in the 19th century.

The Breckinridge Research Room will be closed starting May 11, 2026, and anticipates re-opening Fall semester 2026 in an alternate location for the duration of the King Library renovation.
