Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Richard French (1792-1854) joined the Kentucky bar in 1820 and practiced law in Covington and Winchester, Kentucky. He married Mary Taliafero (1805-1886); they had two daughters and four sons. French served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1820 to 1826 and as a judge of the circuit court in 1829. A Jacksonian Democrat, he served three nonconsecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (1835-1837, 1843-1845, 1847-1849). In addition, he unsuccessfully ran for governor of Kentucky in 1840. He died in Covington, Kentucky, in 1854.

- The collection consists of two letters to Richard French from William Johnson concerning depositions for a court case involving the Payne family.
