Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Founded in 1854 by David Sayre, the Sayre School was located in Lexington, Kentucky, on Mill Street and known as Transylvania Female Seminary. The next year it was renamed the Sayre Female Institute and moved to Limestone Street.
- Scope and Content
- These records relate to the founding and subsequent operation of Sayre School, including correspondence, bills, wills, legislative acts, school catalogues, charters, and brochures. The records contain a copy of the will of David Sayre (1870); legal papers from the turn of the century discussing the transfer of the school from the Board of Trustees to the Presbyterian Synod of Kentucky; correspondence (1899-1917) concerned with raising funds for new buidings and equipment; commencement programs; school catalogues (1900-1903); school brochures (1904-1910); bills; checks and receipts (1904) a stock book (1904); a stock certificate book (1904); and invitations to school functions.

The Breckinridge Research Room will be closed starting May 11, 2026, and anticipates re-opening Fall semester 2026 in an alternate location for the duration of the King Library renovation.
Reproduction requests will still be available during the closure.
