pride have produced it. No people in this great country
can boast of more pride for their State than have the

Wonderful horses. So should this great State be equally
interested in human life and development. All should

more complete form; the child is to be better than the parent, the race
is to evolve toward perfection. As the Kentucky horse surpasses all
others in speed, beauty and endurance, so the Athletics of Kentucky
should surpass those of other States.

its Athletic history. With a new and complete equipment the College
is able to offer greater inducements to those receiving physical as well
as mental development than any similar institution in the South.
The teams of the State College are bound to be supreme in the State
and no Kentuckiau should be content until they surpass the team of
any school they may meet.

The State College has and will stand for purity in Athletics.
“Ringers” are not recognized in this school. Each member of the team
is a student and a gentleman, who has won his position by hard and
persistent work and who knows that he must keep up his studies and
work hard on the team or lose his position.

With the loyal support of students, faculty and friends, with the
new gymnasium and new candidates for honors, the coming year
should be a memorable one in the Athletic history of the State College.

DR. J. ALBERT SMEDLEY,

An old student of K. S. C. wins honors.

 

R J. ALBERT SMEDLEY was born in Fayette County, Ky., August 11th,
1875, near Fort Spring, seven miles from the city of Lexington. His early
education was acquired in the county schools. In 1893 he entered State
College and for two years was an ardent student in that institution. In
’95 and '96 he taught successfully one of the leading schools in Fayette
county, and in the year of ’97, entered the Louisville College of Dentistry,
one of the leading institutions of its kind in the United States. He dis-
tinguished himself throughout his college career by taking the honor prizes
three successive years, and was appointed valedictorian Of his class. The

last prize he received was a handsomely engraved faculty gold medal, given for pro-

ficiency and general standihg in all branches. After his graduation from the Louisville

College of Dentistry, he was offered a position in that institution as instructor in

Orthodontia and Crown and Bridge Work, which he accepted but only for one year,

intending at the end of that time to practice his chosen profession in the c1ty of Lex-

ington. He is now located at No. 97 East Main Street, where he occupies a neat and

attractive office.
