- Politician, attorney. McAfee was a resident of Mercer County, Ky, and had his law practice there. He was an Army officer in the War of 1812, and later served several times each in both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly. He was the lieutenant governor of Kentucky from 1824 to 1828 under Joseph Desha. He also served as U.S. Charge d' Affairs in Bogota, Colombia from 1833 to 1837.
- Scope and Content
- The original manuscript of McAfee's memoirs is part of the Durrett Collection at the University of Chicago. This is a collection of papers relating to Robert Breckinridge McAfee, a Kentucky lawyer and politician. The papers include a letter written by McAfee in 1807 to Colonel James Taylor about depositions to be taken for a case in Mercer (County) Circuit Court (67M205) and a diary McAfee kept in 1808, in which he noted events of the day, his personal reading, and attitudes of the day about various topics, including Shakers (52W16). Also included is a typescript copy, made in 1922 by Samuel M. Wilson, of McAfee's memoirs (62W6).

The Breckinridge Research Room will be closed starting May 11, 2026, and anticipates re-opening Fall semester 2026 in an alternate location for the duration of the King Library renovation.
