Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Gaines Family & the Boone Connection
I [Kenneth Robertson] am related to Daniel Boone through the Gaines side of my mother's family. Her great-great-grandfather was Dr. Avery Gaines. Avery's grandfather was Phillip Gaines, son of Will Gaines.
James Gaines, son of Phillip, married Sarah Bryan, daughter of William Bryan (founder of Bryan's Station) and Mary Boone (Daniel Boone's sister). James and Sarah's house was still standing as of 2011, just outside Athens, Kentucky. They are buried in a locust thicket about a quarter mile behind the house. I have pictures.
Charles Gaines, son of Phillip, built Grimes Mill and the house above the mill, which Dr. and Mrs. Charles Martin now owns. Phillip Gaines is my 4x great-grandfather.
Rice, Crooks, and Calk Families
Through my mother's Rice line, I am related to William Calk, who helped survey the site of Fort Boonesborough and later settled in present-day Montgomery County, Kentucky.
One of his descendants, S.J. Calk of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, had family artifacts from Boonesborough and donated them to the Kentucky Historical Society.
My relation to William Calk comes through the Crooks and Rice families:
1. S.J. Calk's father was Price Calk, who married Emma Crooks.
2. Emma's parents were Thomas Crooks and Sarah Elizabeth Rice.
3. Sarah was the daughter of Jefferson Rice, my 3x great-grandfather.
4. Three Crooks brothers married three of Jefferson Rice's daughters.
The Smith and Gaines Connection
Enoch Smith was another early Kentucky ancestor. He and William Calk engineered and surveyed present-day Montgomery County, Kentucky. Enoch Smith laid out the town of Mt. Sterling.
Enoch Smith's second marriage was to Frances Wren. Their son, Enoch Smith Jr., married Sally Gaines, daughter of James Gaines and Sally Bryan (Daniel Boone's niece). Enoch Smith Jr.'s daughter married Mitchell Gaines, son of Dr. Avery Gaines. Dr. Avery Gaines was my 4x great-grandfather, and Phillip Gaines was my 5x or 6x great-grandfather.
Boone and Lincoln Family Connection
Daniel Boone was related to President Abraham Lincoln through the marriage of William Boone and Sarah Lincoln, daughter of Mordecai Lincoln and his first wife, Hannah Salter.
Connections to the Lincoln and Marshall Families
Salter was a sister to John Lincoln, the great-grandfather of President Abraham Lincoln. My great-grandmother, Susan Finch Duval, married William Harvey Ring. Her grandfather was Thomas L. Duvall, who married Hannah Marshall. Hannah Marshall's line traces back to Col. Thomas Marshall and Mary Randolph Keith. They had several children, including:
1. John Marshall, who became Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
2. Dr. Lewis Marshall and Alexander Keith Marshall, brothers of John.
Dr. Lewis named a son Alexander Keith Marshall (A.K. Marshall) after his brother. A.K. Marshall became a doctor and built a home just south of Lexington, Kentucky. The bricks for the house were fired from clay on Daniel Boone's land across the Lexington Pike. The house was later sold to the Bryan family. As of January 25, 2013, the property is recognized as a Kentucky Historical Site.
The Hart, Shelby, and Clay Lineage
Nathaniel Hart was born May 8, 1734, in Hanover County, Virginia, and died July 22, 1782, at Fort Boonesborough, Kentucky. He was one of the original settlers at Boonesborough. His parents were Thomas Hart and Susanna Rice. Susanna Rice was an aunt of Daniel Rice, a well-known Presbyterian minister in Orange County, North Carolina.
In 1760, Nathaniel married Sarah Simpson. Their daughter Susanna Hart married General Isaac Shelby in 1783. Shelby became the first governor of Kentucky. Susanna Hart was descended from Thomas [?] Rice, my seventh great-grandparent. Thomas Hart and Susanna also had a son, Thomas Hart III, who married Susanna Grey. Their daughter, Lucretia Hart, married statesman Henry Clay. Thomas and Susanna (Grey) Hart are buried in the Old Episcopal Burying Ground in Lexington, Kentucky. The Rice and Blair Family
David Rice and Susanna Searcy had a son, Rev. David Rice, known as "Father Rice" and the Apostle of Kentucky Presbyterianism. He married Mary Blair, daughter of Rev. Samuel Blair. Father Rice was the founder of Transylvania University in Danville, Kentucky, and had brothers who were also ministers.
The Payne, Grimes, and Cooke Families
Nicholas Grimes and Sarah Donaldson had a daughter, Sarah Grimes, who married Abraham Lay. Their daughter, Abigail Grimes Lay, married Sanford Payne, son of William Payne and Alicia Jones. Sanford Payne and Abigail Grimes Lay had a son, Col. Brooks Payne, who wrote The Paynes of Virginia. Another son, George Payne, married Mary Coe in 1803. After George's death, Mary Coe Payne married Nicholas Grimes III.
Giles Cooke married Alicia Payne, daughter of William Payne and Susan Clari. William Payne was the son of William Payne and Alicia Jones.
Giles Cooke and Alicia Payne had a son, Littleton Cooke, who married Margaret Young, daughter of Robert Young and Judith Heath Tebbs. Their daughter, Judith Amanda Cooke, married James Harvey Rice, son of Jefferson Rice and Nancy Wright Richards, on August 10, 1884.
James Harvey Rice and Judith Amanda Cooke's son, William Harvey Rice, married Susan "Sudie" Finch Duvall, daughter of William Henry Duvall and Margaret M. Davis, on April 4, 1916.
William Harvey Rice and Susan Finch Duvall had a daughter, Julia Duvall Rice, who married James Verner Ewan. James was the son of Avory Mitchell Ewan, who married Lydia Ann Chappell, daughter of Edward Franklin Chappell and Mary Wilson. Avory Mitchell Ewan was the son of John Beasley Ewan and Elizabeth Bates Grimes—my great-great-grandparents.

Scope and Content
The Rice-Robertson family genealogy collection (1836-2024, undated; 4.25 cubic feet, 9 boxes, one oversized folder) documents the genealogical, personal, and social histories of several interconnected early American families, with a strong focus on the Rice, Ewan, Robertson, Grimes, Joyce, Cardwell, and Duvall lines. Compiled by Kenneth Robertson, son of Howard F. Robertson and Evelyn Rice Ewan, the research spans from the 1600s through the 2020s and centers geographically on Kentucky, Virginia, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Indiana. The Genealogy research binders series includes pedigree charts, family group sheets, correspondence, historical narratives, Bible records, Daughters of the American Revolution applications, and printouts from genealogical websites, particularly Ancestry.com. The binder contents trace family migrations and connections to early Kentucky settlement sites such as Fort Boonesborough and Bryan Station, and reference notable descendants including Associate Justice Gabriel Duvall and Chief Justice John Marshall. The Papers and Journals series consists of original documents including wills, deeds, letters, memorials, a Revolutionary War pension form, and a poetic commonplace book containing a lock of hair. These materials reflect nineteenth and early twentieth century family life and civic involvement, with key individuals such as members of the Bullock, Marshall, and Rice families and ties to Kentucky, Missouri, and Virginia. The Photographs series captures multiple generations of the Rice, Ewan, Robertson, and Wood families through formal portraits, rural scenes, and family gatherings. Most photographs were removed from genealogical research binders and depict locations in Mason and Fleming Counties, Kentucky, along with other sites throughout the region.

Scope and Contents

The Genealogy research binders series (1920-2024, undated; 4 boxes) comprises the interconnected histories of numerous American families, with a strong focus on the Rice, Ewan, Robertson, Grimes, Joyce, Cardwell, and Duvall lines. Spanning from the 1600s to the 2020s, the binders trace migrations from early colonial settlements in Virginia and the Carolinas through Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, West Virginia, and into the Midwest. Included are pedigree charts, family group sheets, correspondence, historical narratives, and records of military service—particularly during the American Revolution. Notable figures such as Chief Justice Neil Gorsuch and Associate Justice Gabriel Duvall are referenced as descendants. Several volumes explore family ties to key sites in frontier history, including Fort Boonesborough, Boone Station, and Bryan Station. The materials also include Daughters of the American Revolution applications, Bible records, journals, Christmas letters, reunion materials, and wills. Most of the research sources are printouts from the internet, such as Ancestry.com records. The binders reflect decades of research and documented family memory.

Prominent names such as Bullock, Rice, Ewan, Grimes, Preston, and Wood appear throughout, with records tied to places like Lewisburg, Maysville, Lexington (Kentucky), Louisa County (Virginia), and Pleasant Hill (Missouri). Highlights include a Revolutionary War pension form, letters describing life soon after the United States Civil War, and a poetic commonplace book by Ranna S. Grimes that includes a lock of hair. Other notable documents include court and land records, estate settlements, a school report card, war ration books from the 1940s, and handwritten reflections following the deaths of loved ones.
