- Biography / History
- Robert Spencer Cotterill was born in Ewing, Kentucky in 1884. He received his Bachelor's from Kentucky Wesleyan College, his Master's from the University of Virginia and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He was the author of numerous history works including History of Pioneer Kentucky (1917), "Early Railroading in Kentucky" (1919), The Old South (1936), A Short History of the Americas (1939), and The Southern Indians (1954).
- Scope and Content
- The Robert Spencer Cotterill papers (dated 1981-1985; 0.23 cubic feet; 1 box) consist of a copy of the manuscript, The History of Fleming County, the first one hundred years, 1780-1880 and accompanying correspondence. The correspondence is primarily between Samuel Cassidy and Cotterill's nephew, Arthur L. Cotterill, and niece, Marie C. Grannis, and includes letters, conditions governing the manuscripts printing, and lists of parties interested in its publication. Also present are the maps compiled by Samuel M. Cassidy, the donor of the collection, that were to be included in Cotterill's book.

The Breckinridge Research Room will be closed starting May 11, 2026, and anticipates re-opening Fall semester 2026 in an alternate location for the duration of the King Library renovation.
