- William Goebel and John L. Sandford (also spelled Sanford) were bitter political rivals in the Covington and Kenton County area of Kentucky in the 1890's. Goebel wrote an insulting newspaper article about, among other things, Sandford's attempt to gain a pardon for a relative convicted of fraud. A few months later, in April, 1895, Goebel and Sandford, meeting on the street in Covington, exchanged words about the article, then each fired a shot at the other. Sandford was fatally wounded; Goebel was not hit. Goebel was cleared of criminal charges as it could not be proved who fired first. In 1898, Kate M. Sandford, John Sandford's widow, filed suit against Goebel, asking $100,000 damages in the death of her husband. She was represented by Theodore Hallam, another bitter foe of Goebel's. Mrs. Sandford lost her case in the Circuit Court, and lost again on appeal to the Kentucky Court of Appeals. Goebel was later elected governor of Kentucky.

- This is a microfilmed collection of legal papers associated with a suit filed by Kate M. Sandford against William Goebel in the death of her husband, John L. Sandford. It includes typescripts of testimony given in the case and other legal documents, including a bill of exception.
