i realize you are more than busy and that this is a great
deal to ask, but I will certainly be grateful if you will

National office that Mr. Meeks was resigning and the executive Committee
would have to appoint his successor, it seemed that yau had a task.

I am wondering if his assistant,Mr. &ravitt,will be automatically consid-
ered as he was taken in with that in mind.

. V ‘Mr. Gravitt has been in New England for our conventions
and is Very well thought of here. He was very well received at the six
state Convention in Maine . He seems to have made a good impression on

the Legislators and législative committees, helping the cause of the
League.

It just occurred to me that you might like opinions

Golden Jubilee Convention in Chicago. Sincerely hope that you
enjoyed the occasion as muchas we enjoyed your presence and
that you had a pleasant and a safe journey home.

Words are inadequate for me to express to you my appreciation
for the part you played in the gifts presented to me on the
above occasion. I feel that while we have accomplished much
over the past fifty years, a greater portion of the credit
should go to the postnasters whose membership gave us the
support necessary to bring about the benefits that have been
achieved,

Your cooperation and support given to me as a League member
will abrays be remembered, and I ask that the same loyal
support and cooperation be given to my successors, Mr, Gravitt:
your National Secretary, and Miss Norris, your Assistant
National Secretary, mo‘are well experienced and fully
competent to carry on the work in the years that lie ahead
but any success to be attained depends upon the district
postmasters.

There are several bills pending before the Congress: some
good, some bad, but you can count on our leaders to support
those that will be beneficial and to oppose those which
contain hannflfl. provisionse The League is the only post-
masters' organization qualified under its present organization
to best represent the interests of the postmasters, and we are
pleading for all loyal League members to see that their
respective county is organized one hundred per cent so that
our leaders will have the backing necessary for your own
interests.

Dear Mr. Jones:

When Harriet, who had been employed in the National Office for 19 years, was un-
ceremoniously notified 15 minutes before quitting time on Friday, February 5, that
her services were no longer needed because the EXecutive Committee had instructed
Mr. Gravitt to curtail expenses and then the very next working day her successor
reported, it was quite apparent that Mr. Gravitt had interviewed applicants after
office hours so that Harriet would not know of it and he would have the opportunity
of “firing“ her, and it was not for the purpose of economizing as he indicated to
her.

It became quite apparent to me and others in the office that we had no security of
position--no doubt he would do the same to us, so it was no surprise to me that
yesterday 15 minutes before quitting time Mr. Gravitt informed me that he would
either announce my resignation, or I would be dismissed and that my successor would
report today.

Mr. Gravitt‘s desire to get rid of the long-time employees of the league office has
been evident since the retirement of Mr. Meeks as he began taking over every detail
of the work and declined to permit me to do the job that I had been doing for many
years. It was further evident that he wanted no one in the office who would know
of his many mistakes or who was more familiar with the office routine than he.

I have worked hard and loyally for the League for over 15 years, doing the best job
I knew how to do and none can say that I have ever done anything but a good job.
During the war years, Mr. Meeks and I worked from 8 in the morning until 10 at night
6 days a week, week in and week out, to build the League because we could not get
the necessary help to do the job during the day. This was at a time when the League
had assets of only about $7,000 and through this teamwork, we were able to increase
the assets to more than $60,000 and were able to retain these assets through strict
economy. Just recently I spent every spare minute of my own time for months to do
the research, preparation and writing of the history of the League's first 50 years
because there was never time enough to do it at the office. This was an act of

love on my part, for I have loved the League and its people with all my heart during
the years I have been associated with it.

It is regretted that now, because a new man is in charge of the National Office, I
am unable to continue to serve the organization and people I love. This organiza-
tion has worked tirelessly its entire lifetime to secure and keep security of
position under civil service for the postmasters. Yet, the officials of this or-
ganization do not accord the same consideration to the employees in its national
office. The whims of a new and inexperienced man are the determining factors and
not the fine principles of the organization in the treatment of the League employees.

On August 19, 1953, the Executive Committee officially appointed me as Assistant
National Secretary and Associate Editor at a stipulated salary, positions I had been
filling for 10 years previously. This information was publicly announced to the
membership of the organization through the pages of the POSTMASTERS ADVOCATE, thus
making me an official of the organization and as such, my name has appeared on the
letterheads of the organization for the past ll years.

At a closed-door session prior to the Chicago Convention, Mr. Gravitt asked the Com-
mittee to give him full authority over all employees in the National Office with the
right to hire and fire them. Thus the committee gave a small man a big stick which
he has promiscuously wielded since. At an Executive Committee meeting following the
national convention, Mr. Gravitt blandly dictated this decision of the Executive
Committee to me. When I questioned it, I was told the committee all concurred with
the exception of John R. Gallagher, who stated he did not vote.

However, there is one thing the Executive Committee and Mr. Gravitt overlooked. By
your action on August 19, I had been made an “official” and the authority given

Mr. Gravitt did not specifically mention me, either by name or as an official, but
merely said ”employees.“ Therefore, Mr. Gravitt does not have the right to fire me
and I am officially resigning to you, President Jones, as an official of the or-
ganization to be effective immediately.

Although I have never worked for anyone but the National League, in view of the
manner in which the other long-time League employee was treated without even the
courtesy of a letter of recommendation, I know I cannot expect any better consider-
ation from the League officers. However, I am sure the fine letter of recommenda-
tion which Mr. Meeks will give me will be all that I need when I seek other employ-
ment.

The 15 years that I served with Mr. Meeks in the National Office were truly a
pleasure for he is a man of character and high integrity and just in all his deal-
ings with the employees as well as business associates. This, and the fine people
I have worked for, met, and loved, are the things that I want to remember about
the league and not the nightmare of the past six months.
