Dear John:

I have wanted to write you for sometime, but the usual reason
prevented my doing so; that isg I suppose we can say that it
was purely carelessness.

Perhaps the reason I am writing you now is to attempt to pass
on a part of a burden that weighs rather heavily on both Mrs.
Hewn and myself. We lost Jackie in April and have been trying
to get up the courage to write and tell you a little something
about it because you and Jackie appeared to be such pals at
Charleston, Then Jackie, his Mother and I have often discussed
you, and I can truthfully say that we think a great deal of you,
even though our contact was of such a short duration.

I believe it was Christmas, a year ago, that Jackie Boy go

ta
large box of candy from Ohio and I know he wrote you a letter
of appreciation. As well as I remember I read the letter
before he mailed it.

To explain it all, John, I will say that my lad was struck
with a truck on the 16th of April and died on the 22nd. There
is nothing more to be said about it. Of cOurse, Mrs. Hawn

and I have been almost prostrate with grief, but things are
changing even though they are so slow and it seems uncertain
as to when we will be able to "face the music" again, if ever,
with any degree of cheerfulness.

We discussed you last night and I told my wife that I thought
I would write today and tell you about Jackie. We hope that

you will write us because we did enjoy meeting and associat~

ing with you those few days.

I h0pe the Post Office there is doing a good business and that
you are in excellent health. Write me when you can for we will
be glad to hear from you.
