- The Works Progress Administration was a New Deal agency that operated from 1935 until 1943. It employed millions of unemployed workers to build public works, such as bridges, dams, public buildings, or roads.
- Scope and Content
- The Labor union newspaper transcripts (dated 1831-1950, bulk 1888-1922; 1.8 cubic feet; 4 boxes) contains transcripts made by the Works Progress Administration from Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio, newspapers concerning the union movement and labor problems. The newspapers used include the Covington Journal, Daily Commonwealth (Covington), Kentucky Post (Covington), Western Citizen (Paris), Courier-Journal (Louisville), The Enquirer (Cincinnati), and Cincinnati Gazette. Additionally, the collection includes the following Lexington, Kentucky, newspapers: Observer and Reporter; Lexington Morning Transcript; Lexington Leader; Lexington Herald; Lexington Daily Press; Kentucky Statesman; and Kentucky Gazette. Other materials include CIO literature, charts showing statistics on local unions, and documents listing outcomes for Kentucky gubernatorial races from various election years.
