Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Hyden, seat of Leslie County, Kentucky, was founded in 1878 and named for state Senator John Hyden (1814-1883). Leslie County, organized from parts of Clay, Harlan and Perry Counties in 1878, is named for former Governor Preston H. Leslie. In 1928, the Frontier Nursing Service, under the leadership of Mary Breckenridge, built and dedicated the Hyden Hospital. In the 1930s, multiple schools and a library were built in Hyden as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) efforts in Kentucky.
- Scope and Content
- The Hyden, Kentucky, lantern slide collection (dated 1895-1903; 0.14 cubic feet; 35 items) comprises glass lantern slides that document Hyden, Kentucky, landscapes and individuals around the turn of the 20th century. Many slides depict scenes from Hyden, Kentucky, as well as nearby "Hell for Sartin/Certain". The slides depicting Hyden buildings and schools provide a glimpse of the town before WPA changes and additions in the 1930s. Some slides are labeled, identifying places and people's names. No details are known about the photographer.
