- The material consists of information gathered by Travis Edwin Smith on the life of Benjamin Orr Peers whom Smith, at one time, planned to use as the subject of his dissertation. Peers who was an Episcopalian clergyman, served for a time as President of Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. as well as establishing the "Eclectic Institute", a short-lived progressive school, in Lexington in the early 1830s. The volume contains typescripts of published articles from books relating to Peers, of correspondence and of minutes from Transylvania University Board of Trustees meetings. Smith later became interested in a broader subject, however and his dissertation, "RISE OF TEACHER TRAINING IN KENTUCKY" was published by George Peabody College for teachers in Nashville, Tn. in 1932.

The Breckinridge Research Room will be closed starting May 11, 2026, and anticipates re-opening Fall semester 2026 in an alternate location for the duration of the King Library renovation.
Reproduction requests will still be available during the closure.
