- Architect. Cincinnatus Shryock, from Lexington, Ky, worked in a later period than his older and more famous brother, Gideon Shryock. Although he had intended to become a doctor, he lacked one course when he dropped out of Transylvania University Medical school in Lexington and began studying architecture with his brother. During the Civil War, Shryock operated a ferry on the Kentucky river and once aided his friend, General John Hunt Morgan, in transporting his troops across the river. Soon after the war, Shryock moved back into the city of Lexington, contracting to design private homes and public buildings.
- Scope and Content
- This is a microfilmed copy of a scrapbook containing clippings, notes, programs, papers, and photographs collected by Jean O. Fields, Cincinnatus Shryock's granddaughter. The scrapbook contains clippings about the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington, which Shryock designed in 1872; a page from Shryock's records as clerk of the session of the First Presbyterian Church (1879-1882); photographs of Shryock and his buildings taken by Fields and Clay Lancaster; a short paper on her father by Elizabeth Shryock Fields; and a list of public and private buildings in Central Kentucky designed by Shryock. The scrapbook is interspersed with explanatory notes and personal observations by Jean Fields.

The Breckinridge Research Room will be closed starting May 11, 2026, and anticipates re-opening Fall semester 2026 in an alternate location for the duration of the King Library renovation.
Reproduction requests will still be available during the closure.
