This little cottage is now the capitnl of
the Civic Conscience of Knott County: the
reilroadlees mountain County of 11,000
population.

Through the light that has been shed from
the Caney Creek Community Center (which
built Radcliffe Cottage in this faetnees)
Knott County has formed itself into an AI-
Bnciation for Community Improvement, with
the little cottage as headquarters.

This Association is making each of the
sixty public schools of the County, the
Capitol of the Community It is erecting
at strategic points five other Community
Centers which, like Caney consist or a
graded public school owned by the County
and a Community Center owned by the com—

Gathered at Caney, there is a large group
K C C l A of earnest mountain young people who have

pledged to give their skilled training to
the County. These young people desire to be
printers. librarians, nurses teachers,
doctors, Community workers, leaders of

public life and progress. Funds are needed to help these youths to secure this

training The financial help they receive, they will return, when they are

qualified to hold positions in the County, for the use of the group following

after.

Radcliffe cottage. perched against its mountains, is the fleece toward which
this awakened County is facing. Let us bring to these "Knights” the realiza~
tion of their vision-which is EDUCATION FOR SERVICE.

The completion of this school and
its ownership by the County, will
make "The Mount Holyoke" the fin—
est County school in Knott or con—
tiguous counties, placing Caney in
the front ranks in education.

It is Roxy herself who props up the frame to the
"Dream—House" when she trudges off over the mountain
to pick berries to earn for herself a wash basin

and "rose~5melly" soap, and dress material for her
mother to make into a clean little garment so that
she can sit 0n the white-linen lap of the district
nurse and listen to the story of what the honey—bee
did for the little girl who smelled so very like

a rose that he couldn’t tell the difference......

But that is the district nurse’s story!

After Roxy has listened to the story and clembered

down and gone running off to the linden tree to

find for herself the honey~bee who helped the

little "roso«smelly" girl, the district nurse shuts

the door of her mountain she ter and climbs the

cliff to look at the beginnings of the ”Bream—House"

the foundation of which was laid by the baby and

The first wind—storm would shatter the beginnings
of the "Dream—House!"

The "Dream—House” must be strengthened before it
is framed and roofed!

Wearily the district nurse follows the winding
creek-bed and turns up the meandering "Branch"
to the cabin of the baby and Roxy: a one—rOOm,
windowless log—cabin with tree—trunks for chairs
and planks for beds.

Because she knows for absolute certainty that the
cleanness of Roxy and the baby have become non—
negotieble family assets, she deliberately strength.
ens the supports of the "Dream—House" by apparently
tearing them asunder.

FINAL REPORTS OF CHRISTMAS IN FLOYD AND KN'OTT

All the reports are in, from the supervisors of puDEic schools in Floyd and Knott;
Over one hundred public schOCJS and ”hristmae Trees, with a gift and bag of candy for:
each child in the schools marked with the name of the child It is estimated that over

15,000 persons were present at the Trees. There was a Santa Claus at each Tree too.
