Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- George W. Smither was the owner of Pond Branch Landing on the Kentucky River. His son, Otto Smither, was a member of the Owen County, Kentucky Board of Education (1926-1940) and was elected to the Kentucky State legislature (1940-1942). The family lived in Monterey, Owen County, Kentucky.
- Scope and Content
- The Smither family papers (dated 1804-1961, undated; 0.4 cubic feet; 1 box) include correspondence, banking records, bills of sale and other financial records concerning the Pond Branch Landing on the Kentucky River owned by the family. Also included is a typescript interview with state representative, Otto Smither and correspondence with Albert B. "Happy" Chandler, Keen Johnson, and Harry Lee Waterfield. In the interview, Otto Smither claims a special liking for Chandler who had a road constructed from Monterey, Kentucky to Gratz, Kentucky, two towns in Smither's district.
