Biography / History
Joseph Henry Kurre was born January 13, 1918, in Nicholasville, KY. He studied chemistry and physiology at University of Kentucky, graduating in 1938. After earning his MD from University of Louisville in 1942, he enlisted in the US Navy and served from 1942-1947. Kurre kept a diary during his service in WWII, which he used to log medical department activities.
Scope and Content
The Joseph Henry Kurre WWII diary and papers (dated 1942-2011; 0.23 cubic feet, 466.57 megabytes; 1 box, 5 digital files) comprise a handwritten diary, full transcription of the diary, photographs, and military forms and records related to Kurre's service and medical department activities during WWII. Also includes digital files of the collection contents. The photographs include portraits of Kurre in uniform, a newspaper clipping of Kurre's obituary, and a class photo from University of Louisville School of Medicine. Military papers include fitness reports, officer qualifications questionnaire, leave of absence forms, military personnel records correspondence, and notice of separation form.
