Collection Overview

- Thomas Hart Shelby, Mary's father, was the son of Governor Isaac Shelby. He owned a plantation called "Grasslands" near Lexington, Ky.
- Scope and Content
- This is a microfilmed copy of letters mostly from Thomas Hart Shelby to his daughter Mary Cosby Shelby. A few of the letters to Mary are from her cousins and acquaintances. There are also a few letters to Mary Shelby's aunt, Susan Hart (Shelby) Fishback. The letters from Thomas concern family matters, national politics, and plantation business, including information on several trips to New York to sell livestock. He also visited Europe and wrote Mary lengthy descriptions.

The Breckinridge Research Room will be closed starting May 11, 2026, and anticipates re-opening Fall semester 2026 in an alternate location for the duration of the King Library renovation.
Reproduction requests will still be available during the closure.
