- Public officer. Named by Kentucky governor James F. Robinson (1800-1882) to serve as the state's financial agent to obtain federal monies for Kentucky's Union Militia, Edward S. Theobald traveled to Washington, D.C, in 1863 in order to plead Kentucky's case before top-ranking federal officials.
- Scope and Content
- The material is comprised of correspondence, notes and newspaper clippings concerned with Kentucky's quest for federal aid for the maintenance of its state militia during the Civil War. Most of the correspondence dates from Theobald's visit to Washington, including an envelope on which both President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton wrote notes, in which Lincoln referred Theobald to Stanton, and Stanton, in turn, referred him to Brigadier General William Scott Ketchum. Other letters include a detailed account of Theobald's interviews with both Lincoln and Stanton, written to his wife; several letters from Theobald to R. J. Atkinson, an auditor in the Department of the Treasury; a draft of a letter from Theobald to Salmon P. Chase, who was then serving as Secretary of the Treasury Department; and a letter from Governor Robinson to President Lincoln introducing Theobald.
- Also included are a one page unidentified abstract of an account in the Quartermaster's Department and a newspaper clipping concerning the University of Kentucky's discovery of the Lincoln note within its collections.
