Abstract

The Elise Shackleford papers include the letters (one from Henry Clay), essays, and the Oath of Allegiance to the Union by the Shackleford family. Also included are the records of pedigree horses maintained by the Shackleford family, as well as political World War II and Cold War pamphlets.

Collection Overview

Biography / History
Elise Shackleford was active in breeding and raising horses in Lexington, Kentucky. She was a stockholder and member of the Board of Directors of the Thoroughbred Record Inc. Her father, James Shackleford, was a Maysville doctor.
Scope and Content
The Elise Shackleford papers include records of pedigrees of the horses which Shackleford worked with from 1916 to 1930, essays, clippings, correspondence, and a collection of propaganda leaflets from Germany during World War II. The essays were written by Elise's father, James Shackleford, when he was a schoolboy. They concern such subjects as temperance, education, and patriotism. The correspondence includes an 1845 letter signed by Henry Clay. Also included are news clippings related to the history of the Lexington area, the horse breeding industry, and social life in Lexington.
