Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Kentucky legislature formed a commission in 1814 to oversee the building of a second state house after the first burned to the ground the previous year. The commission included John Brown, Daniel Weisiger, Richard Taylor, William Hunter, and Jephthah Dudley. They hired Matthew Kennedy to design the house and James Ware for the carpentry. The second state house, completed in 1816, was a nine bay classical structure with a two-tiered cupola. In 1824 the building was destroyed by fire.
