Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Earl Gregg Swem, III (1946-) is a writer and journalist from Louisville, Kentucky. He is the son of Anne Dunnington Swem (nee Beauchamp) (1904-1985) and Earl Gregg Swem, Jr. (1910-1973). Gregg had three half-siblings from Anne's first marriage to Samuel Franklin Ridlehoover, Jr. which left her a widow: Joan Feland (nee Ridlehoover) (1926-2007), Samuel "Sonny" Franklin Ridlehoover, III (1928-1999), and Margaret "Peggy" Morris (nee Ridlehoover) (1930-2016). Gregg attended Emmet Field Grade School as a child. He later attended Alex G. Barret Junior High School and J. M. Atherton High School, where he participated in several music festivals as a bass in the chorus. He also participated in Cub Scouts and the Young Men's Christian Association. After graduating from high school in 1964, Gregg attended the College of William and Mary, where his grandfather, Earl Gregg Swem I (1870-1965), a historian and bibliographer, had served as the primary librarian for two decades. The Earl Gregg Swem Library was later named in his honor. After attaining his degree from the University of Louisville, Gregg worked as a journalist at the Courier Journal for approximately sixteen years, from 1971 to 1987. He obtained a master's degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Kentucky in 1989, and subsequently worked in a library and a historical society. For seventeen years, he sold out-of-print books and ephemera online. He was also part of a poetry club and the gay community, with whom he corresponded frequently over the years, and who were a large part of his life. Gregg's longtime partner was Wade Hall (1934-2015), an author, veteran, collector, and professor at the University of Florida, Bellarmine University, Kentucky Southern College, and later, a creative writing teacher at a school in Union Springs, Alabama, his hometown, where the couple had moved back to in 2006. Hall died nine years later, after the onset of dementia.

Scope and Contents
The Letters series (1946-2018) comprises letters and correspondence created and collected by Gregg Swem. The letters span from Gregg's birth in 1946 to 2018, when the collection was donated. The bulk of the letters are from family and friends, most notably friends from the gay community. The majority of the letters were written at a time when people did not speak directly or boldly, and the language is often disguised by gay subculture terminology.

Scope and Contents
In the Louisville Courier Journal some letters are from actor and photographer, Jean Howard (1910-2000). In 1985, she was invited to speak at the then Filson Club, now Filson Historical Society, about her friendship with socialite and haute couture aficinado Mona von Bismarck, formerly of Louisville. She also spoke of her friendship with Linda Lee, also originally from Louisville, and her husband Cole Porter. Swem interviewed Howard while she was in Louisville and they began a correspondence.
