Collection Overview

Biography / History
On August 23, 1862, Sylvester R. Norton of Madison, Michigan, joined Company B of the Eighteenth Michigan Infantry at the age of 24. In late October 1864, Norton was promoted from Orderly Sergeant to Second Lieutenant and assigned to Company G of the same regiment.

Scope and Content
This collection include five letters written by S.R. Norton to his wife, Hattie Norton, from the Lexington hospital and Camp Ella Bishop; letters refer to military and camp issues.
