- John A. Morris of Owensboro, Kentucky, was the Quartermaster for the 17th Kentucky Infantry. He was stationed at Camp Nelson in Jessamine County, Kentucky during the Civil War.
- Scope and Content
- The John A. Morris copybook, (dated 1863-1865, undated; 0.23 cubic feet; 1 box) comprises one 500 page letterpress copybook for the Camp Nelson Union Army base in Jessamine County, Kentucky. The copybook records payments for teamsters, laborers, wagon makers, blacksmiths, and the management of livestock at Camp Nelson. The inventory lists a wide variety of camp supplies and sometimes their condition and number. A large number of the workers recorded in the copybook were most likely African American, because Camp Nelson was home to a large number of freed and escaped slaves during the Civil War. The collection also contains photocopies of certain pages from the copybook and loose sheets of Camp Nelson supply inventories.
