- Biography / History
- U.S. Senator. James, a native of Crittenden County, Ky, became a lawyer in 1891, following in his father's footsteps. He involved himself in Kentucky Democratic politics at an early age. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1903-1911. He won election to the U.S. Senate in 1912, and served as permanent chairman of the 1912 and 1916 Democratic National Conventions. He died in 1918, while campaigning for a second term.
- Scope and Content
- The Ollie Murray James papers (dated 1906-1918, undated; 0.24 cubic feet; 1 box, 1 folder) consist of correspondence, printed materials, a poster, and newspaper clippings pertaining to James' career in Congress during the administration of Woodrow Wilson. The printed materials relate primarily to Wilson's administration and various congressional issues of the time period, including the Tariff Act of 1913 and the Steel Investigation. Correspondence includes letters from Joseph Tulmulty, Champ Clark, Lucius Pinkham, Henry Watterson, and Woodrow Wilson. The letter from Wilson explicitly seeks James' "counsel and guidance." Additionally, the collection includes a pair of eyeglasses, identified as belonging to Edmonds of Washington, possibly Richard Hathaway Edmonds.
