Collection Overview
- Scope and Content
- The Kentucky medical prescriptions (dated 1880s-1890s; 0.02 cubic feet; 1 folder) includes handwritten medical formulas for patient illnessed to be made by pharmacists. The collection contains 148 prescriptions written on prescription pad paper or scrap paper and 2 recipes. Presciptions from the 1800s were hand written mostly in Latin. Each formula consisted of several ingredients with a measurement that comes from the apothecaries' unit of measure. The papers show location of apothecaries where the compound is made in Kentucky, the formula for each compound, and the signed name of the doctor who prescribed the medication.
