Collection Overview

Biography / History
Architect and author Clay Lancaster (1917-2000) was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky. He earned both his Bachelor's and his Master's degree in art from the University of Kentucky before going on to pursue postgraduate studies at Columbia University. While in New York, Lancaster taught art lectures at Columbia, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Cooper Union in addition to conducting research supported by two Guggenheim Fellowships. The first of his fellowships in 1954 went towards research on the Eastern influence on modern Western art in support of one of his most popular books, The Japanese Influence in America (1963), while the second fellowship in 1963 supported his research on Kentucky architecture. He returned to Kentucky in 1978, purchasing a 19th Century home which he later developed into the Warwick Compound with the additions of the tower, a tea pavilion, and a picture gallery of his own designs. He also taught lecture courses on art and architecture at the University of Kentucky, Transylvania University, and the University of Louisville.
Clay Lancaster was renowned for his work in nineteenth- and twentieth-century American architecture, and his advocacy for historic preservation won several awards in both Kentucky and Alabama. He wrote numerous influential books on architecture and Asian art, and he also wrote and illustrated children's books.
Scope and Content
The Clay Lancaster papers (dated 1887-2022; 90 cubic feet; 115 boxes, 21 folders, 2 tubes; 12.6 GB, 2,062 files) comprise correspondence, notes, drafts, articles, pamphlets, clippings, photographs, slides, negatives, architectural designs, illustrations, postcards, and scrapbooks documenting Clay Lancaster's personal life, academics, and career as an architect and author. The majority of the collection relates to Lancaster's research on American architecture and Eastern art and design. The collection contains Clay Lancaster's original architecture designs. The materials are divided into series based on Clay Lancaster's own organization system for the files while they were held at Warwick.
