Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Sesquicentennial Commission in 1938 to prepare for the 150th anniversary of Kentucky's statehood, which was to occur in 1942. Public funds were not appropriated for the purpose. Governor Keen Johnson appointed the members of the commission in 1940, and Samuel M. Wilson was appointed chairman. The commission, in conjunction with local committees, planned pageants, parades, poetry contests and other events to celebrate the anniversary.
- Scope and Content
- This collection contains papers relating to the work of the Kentucky Sesquicentennial Commission. The bulk of the collection consists of the correspondence of Samuel M. Wilson concerning the commission's activities. Also included are minutes of Commission meetings, financial records, clippings and pamphlets about local celebrations, and photographs of historical reenactments which were staged around the state in 1942.

The Breckinridge Research Room will be closed starting May 11, 2026, and anticipates re-opening Fall semester 2026 in an alternate location for the duration of the King Library renovation.
Reproduction requests will still be available during the closure.
